What is insulating glass and why is it important?

Insulating glass, such as HR++ or triple glazing, is designed to keep heat in and cold out. It consists of two or more sheets of glass with an insulating layer between them, filled with dry air or noble gases such as Argon. This provides:

  • Less energy consumption and lower energy costs
  • Reduced drafts and a more comfortable indoor environment
  • Reduced CO₂ emissions

Types of insulation glass

Double glazing

Double glazing is a simple solution consisting of two panes of glass with a cavity between them. It offers better insulation than single-pane glass, but HR++ glass has a much higher insulation value due to a heat-reflective coating and a gas-filled cavity.

HR++ glass

HR++ glass is an improved version of double-glazing. It offers up to three times better insulation due to a special coating and noble gas filling.

Triple glazing (HR++)

Triple glazing consists of three layers of glass with two cavities. This glass provides maximum insulation and is ideal for energy-efficient homes.

Vacuum glass

Vacuum glass is ultra-thin and offers excellent insulation. This glass is perfect for renovations where window frames are retained.

Preserving glass without new frames

You don't always have to replace your window frames to benefit from insulating glass. If your window frames are still in good condition, HR++ glass or double glazing can often be installed right away. This provides:

  • Less heat loss and lower energy costs
  • Less draft and better sound insulation
  • A simple and cost-effective preservation process.

Prefer to keep your original windows, such as stained glass? Then front windows are a good option. These form an extra layer of insulation and are suitable as a temporary or permanent solution.

Investing in insulation glass: What does it cost and what does it pay for?

The cost of insulation glass depends on the type of glass and the size of your windows. By replacing single glazing with HR++ or triple glazing, you can reduce your heating costs by 10-30%. This means that your investment often pays for itself within 5 to 10 years. In addition, insulating glass increases the value of your home and improves your living comfort.

Subsidies for insulation glass: what are your options?

From January 2025 the subsidy conditions for insulating glass within the ISDE scheme will be further improved. This makes replacing single or outdated insulation glass with modern HR++ glass or triple glazing even more attractive. Thanks to this scheme, you can get part of your investment back, depending on the type of glass and the insulating measures you choose.

Wat houdt de ISDE-subsidie in?

De ISDE-subsidie is beschikbaar voor huiseigenaren die hun glas verduurzamen. Zo kun je profiteren van:

  • €25 per m² subsidy when installing HR++ insulation glass.
  • €111 per m² subsidy when installing triple insulation glass.

If you take two or more insulating measures within 24 months, such as combining insulating glass with cavity wall insulation, for example, your subsidy amount doubles.

With these benefits, you'll notice an immediate difference:

  • Your home stays warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
  • Less draft and a more comfortable indoor environment.
  • Better sound insulation, ideal for homes in urban areas or along busy roads.
  • Lower energy costs and lower carbon emissions.
