Description

What is heat-reflective glass?

Heat-resistant glass or solar control glass is specially designed to block the sun's heat. To block solar heat, previously considerable concessions had to be made in terms of light transmission. With heat-reflective glass from AA Glass this is history: the heat is blocked, but the sunlight enters your home or office.

How does heat-reflective glass work?

HR++ glazing already has good thermal insulation. With heat-resistant glass, there is an additional coating on one side in the cavity, which blocks extra heat. The cavity is not filled with air, but with a special insulating gas. This is usually the noble gas argon. The invisible coating on the inner glass allows the light from the sun's rays to pass through, but reflects the heat.

What are LTA and ZTA values

With heat-reflective glass, the LTA and ZTA values are important:

  • LTA (light transmission factor): the higher the number, the more sunlight it lets through. Clear single-glazing has an LTA value of 0.9. Modern HR++ glass blocks more visible solar radiation and has an LTA value between 0.7 and 0.8.
  • ZTA (solar transmittance factor): the higher the number, the more solar heat it transmits. Clear glass has a ZTA value of 0.8. Modern HR++ glass has a ZTA value of between 0.6 and 0.7.

Nowadays, instead of the ZTA value, the international standard g-value is increasingly used. Read more about this in our knowledge base.

The ideal LTA/ZTA combination for heat-reflective glass

In a solar control window with a low LTA value, there is little light penetration through the glass. Daylight gives space and defines the feeling for the human body. So the trick is always to choose a type of glass that repels heat well but still has a high LTA value for sufficient daylight. With heat-resistant glass, we therefore use a combined value: the LTA / ZTA value.

Example: solar 70/40

  • LTA is 70%: this is the % of light transmitted by this type.
  • ZTA is 40%: this is the % of heat transmitted by this type.

AA Glass, through its experience, has the most ideal heat-resistant types available. Therefore, ask us for advice.

Heat-resistant glass in various designs

Heat-resistant glass can be supplied in HR++ double glazing and HR++ triple glazing. In addition, heat-resistant glass can also be supplied as

  • Clear glass or frosted glass: a frosted finish provides extra privacy
  • ‍Laminatedsafety glass: safety glass or laminated glass consists of at least two panes of glass with a film in between. This film ensures that the glass is held together when it breaks, greatly reducing the risk of injury.

Heat-resistant glass is ideal for many windows

Do you have many or large windows or a glass facade? Then solar control glass can be a godsend. Solar control glass ensures that it does not become a sauna in your home. In addition, solar control glass is not visible and your view does not have to be blocked by blinds or window coverings, so your home retains the desired modern and sleek look.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of heat-reflective glass?
Thanks to the insulating effect of heat-resistant glass, you don't need to cool as much on hot summer days. This saves energy costs and contributes to a better environment. Another advantage is that it eliminates the need for exterior blinds. This saves costs and many people find exterior blinds less attractive.

Is heat-reflective glass better for the environment?
Glass that rejects sun and heat also contributes to a better environment. A simple example is a home or office building with an air conditioning or cooling system. With standard glazing or insulation glass HR++, the room will heat up quickly, requiring the air conditioning system to work harder and consume more power to cool the rooms

Where can I apply heat-reflective glass?
Heat-resistant glass can be used in buildings with many windows, such as glass office facades, conservatories, porches, skylights and skylights.
