Description

AA Glas is a true expert in the supply and installation of monument glass, and with Old Style we have our own brand with a unique quality. Because of our own product line and expert installation, we can provide the best possible monument glass that you can enjoy for a long time. Roughly speaking, we can supply Old Style monument glass in two varieties: single glass and thin double glass.

Old Style™ insulating single glass for monuments (3-8 mm)

The old single glass no longer meets today's requirements such as insulation, soundproofing and burglar resistance. AA Glas can supply modern monument glass from 3 mm and up. A special coating improves the heat and sound insulation significantly. From 6.76 mm we can also supply the monument glass with a special foil between the glass panes. This creates 'laminated glass', which is many times stronger than normal single glass. See illustration below.

Old Style™ ultra thin double glazing for monuments (from 10 mm)

Ultra thin insulating double glass for monuments we can supply from 10 mm thickness. This insulating double glass consists of two glass plates with a 4 mm cavity between them. This cavity is filled with air or gas such as argon, krypton or xenon. In this way, with a pane of only 10 mm, you achieve U-values of no less than 1.4. By comparison, old-fashioned single-glazing achieves a U-value of 5.8.

New: Old Style™ vacuum glass

AA Glass can recently supply vacuum glass. This is the new technology where two glass sheets of at least 3 mm each are separated by a vacuum of 0.1 mm. This makes the glazing as much as four times thinner than triple glass, and weighs a third less for the same size. Check out the vacuum glass product page for more information.

Monumental glass in 3 appearances

Original glass has a typical appearance that refers to a production method of glass in a particular period. Therefore, we supply our monument glass in three different variants, so that the glass perfectly matches the appearance of the building.

  • Before 1920: Monumental monument glass. Other techniques were used in the past, so the glass contained pull marks. This created reflection/distortion.
  • 1920 - 1960: Classic monument glass. By this period, production methods had improved, resulting in less reflection/distortion.
  • After 1960: Modern monument glass. This glass is flat and has a hard reflection. This looks great with the more modern sleek architecture.

Advantages ultra thin insulating monument glass

The benefits of insulating historic properties with our monument glass include the following:

  • Great insulation values. Even though the glass is ultra thin, heating costs and soundproofing will improve tremendously.
  • No condensation. Condensation on the inside of the windows will no longer occur. This is because the thin double glazing consists of two separate panes of glass, so the outside air is not in direct contact with the inside air but is separated by a layer of air or gas. The absence of condensation also extends the life of your window frames and paintwork.
  • No cold trap. Cold fall is the phenomenon that warm air at large window openings cools and then "falls" downward, making it seem like there is always a draft flow across the floor. Where previously with single-pane glass you really felt a cold airflow, with the new glass it is gone. This immediately changes the living comfort of the room or home. The differences are so great that you almost feel like you are in a different house or room.

AA Glas is expert in fitting monumental glass

Installing ultra thin insulation glass in the existing frames is an authentic job, this requires precision and working with care. We do this in three steps:

  1. The existing glass with putty is carefully removed from the existing rebates. The remains of putty are removed and cleaned. To best extend the life of the existing window frames, we prime the rebates with a special durable primer.
  2. The monument glass is glued hermetically into the rebate. This seals it all around. We use specially tested adhesives and sealants to ensure that the sealants do not affect the black sealant edges of the thin insulating glass.
  3. We neatly finish the exterior with a putty substitute. The look is the same as old-fashioned putty, but this modern variety can withstand cold and heat much better. So the putty will not crack open, extending the life of your windows and frames.

Fortunately, AA Glas's mechanics have a lot of experience and they have the VCA certificate (Safety, Health and Environment Checklist Contractors). AA Glas also has the GBO (Glas Branche Organisatie) professional certificate and the ISO 9001 quality mark. In the end this simply means that we deliver the best quality and keep our promises.

Drawn glass

Monumental glass is also called "drawn glass. In the past, house windows were produced in a different way than they are today. The Belgian Fourcault developed a new way of producing glass around 1920. This involved pulling a sheet of glass from a melting sheet of glass with a kind of comb. Hence the name "pulled glass. The surface of drawn glass was not as smooth as that of the later single glass, or float glass, which came on the market from 1960. As a result, with drawn glass you can see a distortion in the pane, something that we can imitate perfectly in our modern insulating monument glass.

Frequently Asked Questions

Icon down arrow
Can I replace the glass in a listed building?
Yes this is allowed, but it is often necessary to apply for a permit. This way you rule out questions from the municipality afterwards. AA Glas can arrange a permit application for you as an extra service. We work with fixed rates and know what the municipalities expect from us.

Is it possible to install monument glass in the existing frames?
The first question is whether the woodwork of the existing window frames is still good enough. If this is the case, we need to see if the rebates are deep enough. If this is at least 10 mm, then we can install ultra thin insulating glass.
Icon down arrow
Why can't monument glass be thinner than 10 mm?
Double glazing consists of 2 panes of glass with a cavity between them (a layer of air or gas). The glass sheets must be at least 3 mm thick. This leaves 4 mm for the cavity. We do not install double glazing with a cavity less than 4 mm, because in that case the desiccant is minimal and the glass can leak that much faster. This is because the edge of the double glazing contains a desiccant, which are grains that ensure that any water vapor (preliminary stage of condensation) is absorbed into the cavity.

Can I get a grant to replace single glazing with monument glass
Since 2 September 2019, homeowners have been able to apply for a subsidy for insulation measures (SEEH) again. The subsidy has been temporarily increased from 1 June 2020. You can now be reimbursed up to about 30% of the costs up to a maximum amount of 10,000 euros. However, you must choose at least 1 other type of insulation to meet one of the conditions. More information about this SEEH subsidy can be found on the website of the Dutch government: https://www.rvo.nl/subsidie-en-financieringswijzer/seeh/eigenaar-en-bewoner. Of course we are happy to help you with this.
