Walkable glass is stylish and optimizes light in your home, restaurant or commercial building. Walkable glass must be strong enough to serve as a floor. Therefore, walkable glass consists of at least three layers of glass laminated with PVB film or cast resin. This makes the glass many times stronger than normal glass and strong enough to stand and walk on.

Description

With a glass staircase or roof deck made of walkable glass, your home will definitely stand out. It gives a stylish and luxurious look. In addition, a lot of natural sunlight comes in when you install walkable glass at your skylight or roof terrace.

Applications of walkable glass and glass floors

Walkable glass can be used in many situations. Examples of applications include stair treads, landings, skylights, basement lighting, a balcony, roof terraces, or glazed glass voids. The following are some examples of applications of walkable glass.

Walkable glass as a roof terrace

When you use walkable glass incorporated into your roof terrace, you do not waste valuable space on your terrace. Therefore, a glass roof is often a nicer solution than a skylight. A skylight is "lost space," the roof can no longer be used as a roof terrace. Perhaps you already have existing outdated skylights, then they can be nicely replaced with walkable glass.

Increase brightness in your basement or basement with walkable glass.

By adding walkable glass to your basement, you create more usable feet of living space. Consider extending your basement into your backyard. This creates space for a glass floor in your patio (see image). If there is sufficient daylight in your home, for example through a skylight, you can also incorporate walkable glass into your interior floor.

Walkable glass as a glass floor

Walkable glass is excellent as a glass floor or staircase. A glass floor offers an extreme spatial effect and provides a sea of light. A great application (see photo below) is to use walkable glass in your stairwell. This way you can continue to use the space above it efficiently and keep the stairwell wonderfully light.

What thickness of walkable glass do I need?

Because the glass is used to stand on or walk on, it needs to be very sturdy. It can even be used to look down from the 30th floor through the floor, for example. We calculate the thickness of the walkable glass for you based on two factors:

  • Use function: for example, retail space, residential function or office building. If the glass is incorporated into a staircase then it will need to be extra thick.
  • Size: the larger the space to be spanned, the thicker the glass should be

At AA Glass, we can supply walkable glass in the following thicknesses:

  • 30 mm
  • 34 mm
  • 41 mm
  • 49 mm
  • 70 mm

For advice on the proper size and thickness of walkable glass, contact us by phone or the quote form. A specialized staff member will help you with all your questions.

Mounting accessible glass

Walkable glass is heavy, this is something you must take into account when assembling. One square meter of 34 mm glass plate weighs over 80 kg. We recommend supporting the glass sheet on 4 sides, with the depth of the support being at least 30 mm. It is also important that the glass rests on wood or rubber. When walkable glass rests on hard material such as metal or stone, cracks may occur under heavy loads.

To guarantee perfect installation, AA Glas works exclusively with its own fitters. They are qualified for this type of work and have the right tools. Because of the weight, a crane is usually needed to get walkable glass in place. Fortunately, we have access to compact lifting cranes that also get every sheet of glass in the right place indoors.

Walkable glass in various designs

AA Glass can supply walkable glass in a variety of designs:

  • Anti-slip: after composing the glass, the glass is treated with an anti-slip coating to make the floor more slippery, preventing slipping.
  • Type of glass: clear or frosted glass
  • Finish: fine or poly ground. With poly, the sides of the glass are ground neatly smooth and the sharp edges are finished with a small bevel.
  • Insulation: we can add an insulating glass panel, giving it excellent insulation values.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of walkable glass
Walkable glass is as strong as regular building materials, but has the great advantage of letting light through. This enhances the spatial effect and provides a modern look. Moreover, sufficient daylight creates a pleasant living environment, which contributes to good health. Walkable glass requires no maintenance and is easy to keep clean. Finally, it is safe: even if the glass breaks, you will not fall through the glass because of the tough plastic.

Is it possible to insulate walkable glass?
By default, walkable glass is not insulated and has similar insulation values to single glass. However, we can add insulating glass (e.g., HR++), making it suddenly excellent insulation.

Is walkable glass safe?
Walkable glass consists of at least three layers of glass laminated with PVB film or cast resin. This makes the glass many times stronger than normal glass and is strong enough to stand and walk on. And if it does get damaged, the tough foil will keep you from falling through the glass.

What thickness of walkable glass do I need?
The required thickness of walkable glass depends on two factors: the load and the span. For example, a retail space will have different requirements than your residential home. We can calculate the required thickness exactly for you.
