Description

How does soundproof glass work

A window with soundproof glass contains a special PVB (polyvinyl butyral) film. This film is sandwiched between sheets of glass. As a result, sound waves are reflected, preventing or greatly reducing the penetration of outside noise. Incidentally, this also works the other way around: the sound inside becomes less audible to the outside world, for example in office spaces, patient rooms, concert halls and theaters.

The RW index of soundproof glass

Soundproof glass is tested for dB (decibel) reduction, called the RW index. The lower this value, the less sound the glass lets through. Standard double glazing has an RW index of 29dB. Modern soundproof double glazing can reach an RW index of 50dB. Because of this, the thicknesses of soundproof glass vary considerably. The thicker the glass the better the soundproofing of the glass.

Four types of soundproof glass

AA Glass can supply 4 types of soundproof glass:

  • Air traffic
  • Road traffic
  • Train
  • Music

Each type of soundproof glass is perfectly matched to the pitch of the sound source to be blocked. In addition, the distance from the source plays a role in determining the thickness of the glass. Depending on your situation, we will advise you on the best solution for window sound insulation.

Keep the noise out, or inside

  • Keep noise out: consider reducing noise from road, train, and/or air traffic. Here insulation is relevant, which is why we recommend double or triple glazing. This kills two birds with one stone: reduce noise and save on heating costs. The maximum thickness of soundproof glass depends on the width of your rebates in your window frame.
  • Keep noise in: for applications such as office spaces, patient rooms, concert halls and theaters, it is important to limit noise to the environment. Here, thermal insulation is not relevant, so single-pane glass is used. We often recommend soundproof safety glass here, which greatly reduces the risk of injury if broken.

Soundproof glass experiences

The experiences of our customers where we have fitted soundproof glass have so far exceeded expectations. In all cases there has been a significant reduction in noise pollution. Glass is therefore an ideal soundproof solution. If desired, we can show you reference projects.

Proper installation of soundproof glass is crucial, as is the use of soundproof ventilation grilles

Installing soundproof glass

Correct installation of soundproof glass is very important. High-quality soundproof glass that is mounted incorrectly will not achieve the expected noise reduction. Also consider ventilation grilles. AA Glas can supply special sound insulating grids, which provide fresh air and stop noise. Assembly is custom work. AA Glas has its own fitters who install soundproof glass with the right materials and tools. Feel free to ask for a quotation or visit our showroom, we will gladly tell you more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Icon down arrow
Will soundproof glass fit in my existing window frame?
If the frame is still in good condition, it will always be possible to install soundproof glass in the existing frame. The thickness of the rebate determines the maximum thickness of the glass.
Icon down arrow
What is the difference between insulation glass and soundproofing insulation glass?
The main difference is that there is a coating, a gas filling and another soundproof film in this glass. In addition, they are tested for dB noise reduction and are given a dB value. Standard insulation glass and HR++ glass do not have these values and are also not tested for noise reduction.

What thickness can be supplied in soundproof single glazing?
There are single glass types available starting at a thickness of 8.76 mm thick increasing to 19.76 mm thick. These types are often used in soundproof glass walls in homes and or offices.

Is soundproof glass also available as triple glazing?
Triple glazing has not been tested for noise reduction. However, we can also add a pane with soundproof coating as with double-glazing. The sound reduction will then at least meet the specifications of this pane.
