Description

Laminated glass consists of at least two sheets of glass with one or more layers of PVB film between them. The glass sheets and film are fused together at the factory under great heat. The film holds the glass together if the pane breaks. You may recognize this effect from a car window; a small stone does not cause the entire window to break, but only causes a star or crack.

Advantages of laminated glass

Laminated glass falls under the category of safety glass. Safety glass is the generic term for glass that has injury-resistant breaking behavior. Breaking standard glass creates large, sharp shards that can seriously injure you. Safety glass disintegrates in a different way, making it much less likely to cause serious injury.

Because laminated glass is custom-made, it is possible to apply this glazing anywhere in the home. In addition, laminated glass can also serve as soundproof glass when placed between facades and partitions.

Laminated or tempered glass?

Laminated glass and tempered glass are often confused. Laminated glass and tempered glass both fall into the category of safety glass, but have different properties. The main difference is in how the glass reacts when damaged.

  • Laminated glass also breaks, but stays together as one piece because of the tough film. It is therefore suitable for applications where there is a chance of falling through it, such as balustrades or railings.
  • Tempered glass is less likely to break, but when it breaks it falls into all sorts of small pieces of glass. As a result, it does not cause deep wounds.

Combining laminated with tempered glass

Laminated glass can also be composed of tempered gas sheets. In this case, this creates a type of laminated glass that is very difficult to break. Should the glass break anyway, you will not fall through it. In this way it is possible, for example, to make an extremely strong balustrade or a roof terrace with walkable glass.

Laminated insulating glass

Laminated glass can also be made as insulating glass. By default, laminated glass is not insulated and has similar insulation values to single glass. However, we can add an insulating glass sheet, which suddenly gives it excellent insulation. This creates extra strong insulating glass that reduces possible injury damage.

When do I apply laminated safety glass?

Laminated glass must legally be applied to windows that start below the parapet (the part of a wall that is between the floor and the bottom of the frame) of 85 cm. This means that glass that starts near the ground (i.e., below 85 cm) must be laminated glass. If people trip and fall and hit the glass, laminated glass will absorb it: it is fall-through-safe.

Custom laminated glass

At AA Glass you can order custom laminated glass. The glass is available from 6 mm to 50 mm thickness and can be processed in various ways. For example, the edges can be ground or a cutout or hole can be made. Tell us your wishes and we will design and install it for you.

What thickness of laminated glass should I use?

The thickness of laminated glass depends on several factors:

  • The size of the pane. The larger the pane the thicker the glass should be.
  • The length-to-width ratio. Long narrow strips of glass from the ground should be thicker.

Size designation laminated glass

The thickness and composition of laminated glass can be represented by a number. Examples are:

  • 33.1: 2 sheets of glass each 3 mm thick, with 1 layer of film between them
  • 44.2: 2 sheets of glass each 4 mm thick, with 2 layers of film between them

What thicknesses of laminated glass are available?

Laminated glass is available in many different thicknesses, the thinnest type is laminated 22.1. One of the most common laminated types is laminated glass 33.2 or laminated glass 44.2. A film has a thickness of 0.38 mm, so 2 films have a thickness of 0.76 mm. A pane with a composition of 44.2 has an actual thickness of 8.76 mm. The thicker the film the better the window is resistant to burglary. Thinner films contribute virtually nothing. We recommend using at least 2 layers of film.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between laminated glass and tempered glass?
Often the two are confused. Laminated glass and tempered glass are both safety glass, but have different reactions when damaged. Tempered glass disintegrates into all small pieces, preventing it from causing deep wounds. Laminated glass stays together as one piece. It is "fall-through-safe" and therefore suitable for applications where there is a chance of falling through it, such as balustrades or railings.

Can laminated glass be implemented as double glazing?
You certainly can. Here, you can choose to have laminated glass on just the inside of insulation glass, or both the inside and outside. Tempered insulating glass can be a wise choice when glass is vulnerable to outside weathering, such as a skylight or sunroom under a slope.

Is laminated glass the same as safety glass?
Safety glass is the general category of glass that reduces injury. Either because the glass falls into small pieces when broken (tempered glass) or because the glass actually sticks together (laminated glass).

Does laminated glass help against burglars?
Laminated glass is also burglar-resistant and burglar-retardant. The glass possesses a film layer between two panes of glass. The film ensures that the glass stays together, making it difficult to get through the glass. Cracks will all appear in the glass, but the glass will stay together at the right thickness and the burglary will be prevented.
