Double glazing consists of two panes of glass that are airtight connected. A metal frame creates space between the two panes of glass. This space between the two panes of glass is called the "cavity." The cavity is filled with dry air. You can also choose a different gas filling, such as Argon, Krypton or Xenon gas. A gas filling contributes to a better insulation value, i.e. a lower U-value. The lower the U-value of the glass, the better the glass insulates. Below is a brief overview of the different types of glass and their corresponding U-values.
Single Glass
Uvalue: 6.0
Thickness: 4 mm
Double glass/insulation glass
Uvalue: 2.6
Thickness: 21 mm
HR ++ Insulation Glass:
Uvalue: 1.2
Thickness: 21 mm
Triple insulated glass:
Uvalue: 0.7
Thickness: 36 mm
Old-Style ultra thin insulating glass:
U-value: 1.4
Thickness: 10 mm
Double-glazed/insulated glass can be made with frames in different colors. Frames are the metal parts that hold the glass layers together, also called the cavity. These are standard in silver, but not necessarily! With dark or black frames, a matching black frame gives an amazing effect.
In new construction today, only double- or even triple-glazed windows are used, but double-glazed windows are also excellent for renovating existing homes. In many cases the frame has to be replaced, because double/insulating glass is heavier than single glass. AA Glas has developed ultra thin insulating monument glass especially for monuments like in Amsterdam, under the brand name "Old Style". This glass combines the looks of authentic "distorting" glass with modern insulation values. The thickness can be limited to just 10 mm, which means it can often be installed in existing historic window frames. This preserves the authentic atmosphere of Amsterdam buildings.
